KIS-Aomori Campus
The Kyoto International School-Aomori Campus provides a warm and welcoming learning environment for the children of scientists who are involved in a nuclear fusion energy project in the northern most parts of Japan. KIS was approached by the Aomori Prefectural Government to establish this school. The school opened in September of 2008, with KIS agreeing to run the school for a period of five years. KIS-AC is a very small school with a high teacher to student ratio. The children attending KIS-Aomori Campus have come to us from Spain and France.
KIS-AC’s inquiry-based curriculum is modeled on the same curriculum running in Kyoto, with the same emphasis on student-initiated learning. Despite the geographical separation KIS-AC and KIS teachers and students meet frequently, both online for educational collaboration and in person for combined school study trips. KIS-AC students also interact with the local schools which gives them an opportunity to form bonds with their Japanese peers and to enhance their language abilities.
KIS-AC is located on the Pacific Ocean side of Honshu island in Aomori Prefecture. The area offers many outdoor activities including snow sports in the winter, hiking, surfing, fishing, and various sports clubs for children and adults.
