KIS is a small, quaint school in the heart of Kyoto city, offering a world-class international education program. The cultural richness of Kyoto is intertwined with a progressive and forward thinking educational model that prepares students to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

KIS is a recognized IB World School utilizing an international curriculum framework. The curriculum provides opportunities for students to develop all their intelligences which build on each other leading to well-balanced, perceptive individuals who have the confidence to take action in the real world. All learning at KIS is based on the understanding that learning takes place when experiences are engaging and relevant to the students lives.  Upon visiting our school, you would witness students working together collaboratively in groups, thinking creatively to solve problems, and using technology to enhance their learning.  A constructivist approach and active inquiry are the most effective ways for students to take responsibility for their learning. We also  believe that students who take responsibility for their own learning, their actions, and the well being of others will become successful and responsible citizens, both locally and globally.

The after school club program for students from  grade 1 to grade 9, promotes a sense of balance for both staff and students. Hobbies and interests with a solid purpose helps to extend the learning beyond the classroom, which promotes the love of learning and again connects learning to the outside world. Junior and Senior clubs are available everyday after school.

The low teacher to student ratio at KIS allows teachers to focus on individual needs allowing extra support in all areas of a students school life.  The closeness between staff and students is evident from the very first time one visits the school and is an aspect of KIS that has continued throughout the years. Teachers at KIS are qualified professionals with a commitment to ongoing professional improvement. Our school has a strong commitment to professional development and to providing leadership opportunities for all our educators.  It is truly a collaborative and professional learning community.

At KIS students, parents and teachers are partners in learning. Parents are encouraged to take an active role in supporting child’s learning. All members are asked to embrace the attitudes we desire in our students. Collaboration and sharing of ideas and creative conflict resolution are important for all relationships within the school.

The traditions at KIS are etched in the memories of past and present students. These end up being the things students remember for years to come, regardless of whether they attended KIS for a year or for the duration of their education. At KIS, special occasions such as birthdays never go forgotten, welcomes and goodbyes’s are considered important along with a variety of annual events throughout the year.

Kyoto International School welcomes diversity in thought, ethnicity and nationality.  Students and teachers at KIS represent more than 13 nationalities. There are also many opportunities for students to visit from other countries, either as members of music or cultural group, or by joining a partnership programs with our school. In living and working with people from other countries, everyone gains a deeper understanding that – regardless of race, religion or nationality – people have many common and unifying characteristics. Being a part of the world community is a vital part of education.
