The fun and collaborative community at KIS is one of its most distinguishing features. We value community, and that connection within our community certainly helps define our school. There is a collective responsibility to provide a supportive and nurturing educational environment in the heart of one of the world’s best known cities. The small intimate size of our school enables us to know our students and their families well, giving greater meaning to the relationship between the student, home and school. Parents and teachers work closely with others in the community to encourage inclusion, open communication, and mutual respect while working toward a common purpose. Students work and play alongside adults in the community and within multi-aged student groups allowing them to develop strong leadership and collaboration skills. The commitment of the older students to act as role models and activity leaders for the younger ones happens in a natural and authentic way, and becomes a distinguishing feature of Kyoto International school. The relaxed yet respectful nature between the students, teachers, and the community is a unique trait that is often commented on by visitors to our school.
Our school inspires and challenges through our world-class education program. An education at KIS is designed to enrich the lives of all students, by offering both academic and creative opportunities to challenge and extend themselves, and to explore all the possibilities available to them. Our learner centered approach to learning ensures both academic and personal growth in which initiative is encouraged and failure is not feared.
We take seriously our collective responsibility to ensure our students are able to thrive and take responsibility anywhere in the world. We already know we are living in a rapidly changing world. The educational needs of today’s students are evolving with the realization that knowledge and memorization are no longer sufficient. We are preparing students for an unseen, but not altogether unpredictable, future; a future where many of the jobs they will hold have not yet even been created. We have established a climate of inquiry that challenges the entire school community to continually re-purpose itself by building on our core values and beliefs, with a focus on the future, by developing a pathway to reach it.
